River House Images

One day, on my way out to see a sandcastle competition, I found a beautiful little home sitting beside a babbling brook. Its windows were covered, but it looked like it would be ready to host yet another year of summer fun at the cabin with a bit of elbow grease. The next summer, I returned and noted that nothing had changed, but it looked like whoever had closed it up was not returning anytime soon. After the third year in which nothing changed but the angle at which the building was sagging, I decided to take some photos. 

I was inspired to bring this house to life in miniature once I saw its missing pieces and felt a hint of the stories it could tell. It was a wonderful house to recreate—full of charm and character—and it became one of the few that I’ve been able to learn the history of, at least in part. When I finished the piece, I posted photos online and was thrilled when a member of the family who once owned the house contacted me. 

The home had been in their family for a considerable number of years—there are photos of their grandfather as a young boy, playing on the now-missing front porch overlooking the brook, and I learned it had always been known, at least to the family, as “the River House.” It had been used as a cottage and summer getaway for the whole family. As I recall, it was sold sometime in the 80’s when they purchased another larger cabin, and they lost track of its story, until my version added a small new chapter. Hearing some of the history behind this place and getting a glimpse of its history was just as rewarding for me as finding and recreating the building.
